The cogs turn, and the stars burn,
and sometimes things align.

I know better
than to disturb the dust
settled on my memory of us.
And yet.

Sometimes, cruelty is subtle and only realised over years,
like a drizzle of small red flags that slowly form a crimson sky.

Oh, man of the mountain,
do you forget how I helped you climb?
How can you stab this doting heart of mine
now that you've reached the top?
#08
The memory lingers like spilt glitter,
refusing to wash away.

Sun-dried grass wraps the porch like nature's incense. It mingles with the ouzo lingering on our breath—a remnant of an evening well spent. Stars power the crickets as they orchestrate summer's song, and the sultry air dances along, brushing our cheeks as it slips through the space left between us. You lace your wrinkled fingers with mine, and we look at each other knowingly: this could be our last time. You tighten your grip, and our wet eyes glisten with all that's unsaid.

And so, I let you go.
Like petals to the wind, we’re free.

I waste my words on our wounded ties, trying to wrench a heart that long stopped beating.

Glinting off the small diamonds that circle the sapphire of my ring, the sun throws a starry night onto the pages of my book. I play a silent piano, shifting, growing, shrinking my galaxy, letting the constellations distract me for a while.

Tale as sharp as lime,
you slipped a knife into my spine.
I asked you why,
and you started to cry,
so now we fish like all is fine.

You’re
my guilty pleasure
my not forever
my soulmate
my too late
a place in my heart
my miles apart
my butterflies
my starry skies
my fantasy
not meant to be
my please let go
you never know
my love

A few glasses of wine to blur the lines, and we’ll deal with the mess tomorrow.
